What the Outcome of the 2022 Elections Mean to Mom Congress

By Joy Burkhard, MBA

With the 2022 midterm elections behind us, Congress is split, with Republicans taking control of the House of Representatives with a slim majority and Democrats retaining their razor-thin majority in the Senate. Newly elected officials will take office in January.

With this divide, any legislation that hopes to be signed into law in 2023 must be bipartisan. Mom Congress is a step ahead as we were founded on the basis that all mothers from either party should have the chance to advocate for improving the most pressing issues of motherhood. Equally, there is a path toward addressing these priorities in a bipartisan* manner. Much like we want our children to ‘play nice in the sandbox,’ we want and expect our federal leaders to do the same. It’s critical to the stability of our country, communities, and home life.

But what does this mean exactly for the policies Mom Congress is working to address?

While we are still working to pass this year’s Moms’ Agenda bills, it will be critical that any new legislation that the Mom Congress team reviews for the 2023 Moms’ Agenda be co-introduced by Republicans and Democrats. We have the opportunity to proactively share with lawmakers that for bills to be considered in the Moms’ Agenda, they must be bi-partisan at the introduction, which the Mom Congress leadership team plans to announce in January.

Additionally, the divided congress signals that prior bipartisan areas of interest will likely receive priority. Republicans and Democrats alike have consistently voiced commitment to expanding Savings Accounts for health care and child care, improving access to telehealth, and addressing the mental health crisis and maternal health crisis, including prioritizing rural populations.

There is no doubt it’s going to be an exciting 2023 in Congress and Mom Congress.
